Hahnemühle FineArt German Etching 310 g/m² — Textured Matt
This piece explores an emblematic building facing the threat of demolition, situated on one of the most emblematic streets in Sofia’s historic centre. Originally belonging to the Moysev brothers, migrants from Macedonia who settled in Sofia in the early 20th century, the building now stands as a deteriorating fragment of brick and mortar. While its upper floors gradually decay, commercial activity continues on the ground floor, contrasting everyday urban life with unjust timely death of this memorable building. Additionally, it is not memorable because of the extravagant or detailed design, but by the people living there for several generations.
The drawing follows through multiple transparent layers, revealing different material states and the gradual fragmentation of its façade. A new dystopian structure emerges in place of the existing commercial ground floor, transforming what was once an accessible public space into an obstructed and fragmented environment. An assemblage of austere metallic structures appears to support the precarious upper façade, creating a speculative architectural montage in which preservation and destruction coexist. These interventions blur the boundary between structural reinforcement and spatial occupation, questioning whether the building is being sustained or gradually consumed by the very structures intended to support it.
In the final layer, pipes and wires intersect and hang over the neglected façade, introducing another dimension of urban infrastructure. The drawing captures a moment of temporal suspension, in which nearly a century of history remains embedded within the architecture, even as its physical existence becomes increasingly uncertain.
