Discourse in Spatial Vacuums: Materiality is a study in the phenomenological reading of architectural surfaces and the materials that define them. The research investigates how materiality — its texture, weight, colour, and decay — communicates meaning and generates spatial experience beyond the purely functional. Through a series of drawings combining ink, oil pastel, and mixed media, the work explores found spaces in the Czech Republic, examining how materials in varying states of deterioration create rich visual and spatial narratives. Each piece engages with a specific material condition — concrete, plaster, brick, timber — and attempts to extract its phenomenological essence through the act of drawing. The result is a body of work that treats material decay not as failure but as revelation, uncovering the deeper life embedded within the surfaces of built space.
